General summary
In glorious autumn weather, 254 running enthusiasts aged between 4 and 70 met on 3 November for the 54th autumn cross-country run at SV Großwaltersdorf. The running and Nordic walking routes covered various distances. For the first time, the Saxon University Championships in cross-country running were held on the 11 km course as part of this running event. Almost 180 metres of elevation gain led uphill and downhill in two 5.5 km laps, mostly over meadow paths. Shorter sections over gnarled forest soil and tarmac made the route very varied. The 7 starters from TU Bergakademie Freiberg achieved excellent results, finishing on the podium in all three categories - women, men and team. In the women's category, Ivonne Uhlig ran away from all the other starters, taking less than an hour to complete the challenging course. Erik Scheuermann won the men's competition, crossing the finish line after just 45 minutes, with Nelson Macamo in third place. The result of the team competition was also eagerly awaited, with the ‘Grubenhunte’ team of Nelson Macamo, Louis Schaarschmidt and Tobias Krichler narrowly beating the ‘TU Bergakademie running group’ team of Erik Scheuermann, Yashraj Sunil Pangre and Birgit Gaitzsch.
The members of the running group Georg Semmler and Sophie Döring, former Freiberg residents, completed the very good results of our team with victory and second place respectively in the 11 km cup run outside the classification for the Saxon University Championships.
Our conclusion: A very well organised running event with the best culinary care, at this point we would like to thank the Skiverein Großwaltersdorf 1953 e.V. once again!
Our outlook: Perhaps we'll see you again next year - if not for the Saxon University Championships, then definitely for the 55th autumn cross-country race in Großwaltersdorf. And - anyone can run, no matter how old, just start, so that maybe next year more than 7 starters will enter the race for the TU Bergakademie.

Silver in the team and bronze in the individual! The ‘Grubenhunte’ start at the cross-country race in Großwaltersdorf
Special feedback from the ‘Grubenhunte’
What a run! On 3 November, three of the most athletic members of staff from the Chair of Underground Mining and Special Processes were full of energy and team spirit at the starting line of the Saxon University Cross-Country Championships in Großwaltersdorf. The sun was shining and the autumn leaves were glowing - perfect conditions!
Dr Tobias Krichler, Nelson Macamo and Louis Schaarschmidt delivered a strong performance and completed 11 kilometres that were quite something: uphill, downhill, through forests and across fields - the cross-country course was anything but a walk in the park and led over demanding paths that put the runners' stamina and surefootedness to the test. Every step was a challenge and calves were burning right up to the finish line (and even days later)!
The ‘Grubenhunte’ team fought their way to a proud silver medal in the team competition - and yes, admittedly the competition was manageable, but the team gave their all and secured a well-deserved second place! Special mention should be made of the great performance of Mr Macamo, who came third in the men's individual competition.
A big compliment also goes to the organisers, who planned the course and catering perfectly so that the day went almost perfectly for the runners - apart from the long wait for the certificates.
Congratulations to the entire team for their sporting commitment and many thanks to everyone who made this special competition possible! This is how commitment works - whether in teaching, research or on the running track!
